Riding the Green Tide: Strategies Among the Sagada Vegetable Gardeners of Northern Luzon
Villia Jefremovas

The “green tide” or the seasonal glut of vegetables in the market is one of the major problems that vegetable growers or gardeners in the Center Cordillera face. Individual gains and losses among these gardeners vary. Some of those who lose quit but others resort to various strategies allowing them to remain independent and viable producers. This paper examines these strategies with a presentation and discussion of case studies, concluding with a comparative look at other areas of the Central Cordillera and an analysis of the role of class, wealth, culture and regional structures in conditioning the capacity of different gardeners to “ride the green tide.
